this feeder leaked from the get go.and i tried everything i could to stop it. i would not buy this expensive product.
I like this one because the parts are mostly metal, and the sun is brutal here on anything plastic. I've mastered it now, so it's not a problem. Add about 1/2 cup of white uncooked rice. I'm also very careful not to over tighten. of white vinegar mixed with two cups of water in the feeder. Rinse well before filling.
It is still in perfect condition. I've been using the same one for 3 years now year round, because we have hummers all year long in Phoenix. Put about 3 Tbls. The only problem I've had with it is aligning the bottom correctly so the nectar doesn't leak out.
Here is a trick for cleaning your feeder. To avoid breaking the neck off of the jar, I soak the unit in warm water for a few minutes before unscrewing. I am ordering my second feeder today. The friction from the rice will clean even the dark mold off of the inside.
I fill it only half way, as the birds don't like the food if it's over a few days old, especially in warm weather. (I use a funnel) and shake.
The feeder is pretty, easy to fill, and holds a lot so I don't have to refill it often. The only problem, is that when it gets really windy, it leaks. We solved it with some silicone.
This feeder has a narrow opening making it challenging to clean. I had two birds visiting it in no time. I bought it based on looks and the overall good ratings. This was my first feeder. First time I went to clean it, I discovered a crack in the neck, that wasn't there the first time I filled it up. Unfortunately I don't have a garden to attract more so they didn't go through the nectar very fast, and I had to toss 2/3. I wont be putting this back up for fear that the bottom half is going to break off completely.
It is larger than expected and I am so pleased with it that I oredered another one.
