Maybe they breed them smarter in the north central US, but it is irritating. We thought for sure this thing we be the end all be all to our grackle problem. Not so. Even with it set maxed out for only the smallest birds, we watch grackles bounce/jump up and down on that thing, timing it just right, to get food out. Wish we had the good fortune others do.There are no issues with squirrels, however, and for that we are thankful.
They even gnawed away the paint from around the feeding holes. So we watched. But did they even get so much as a morsel of the bird feed. On day one, my son predicted that they would be able to figure out the weight mechanism and get the food from the feeder.
Yes, they are cute when they sit up on your fence and chomp away at the wonderful flower bulbs that you planted last Fall. NO. Take that, you evil squirrels.(Oh, and by the way, we have gotten some lovely birds: cardinals, finches, mockingbirds, black-capped chickadees, and many, many more).I highly recommend this feeder -- it's worth every penny. In my never-ending war with our squirrels, I bought a Squirrel Buster. Kind of like my own Animal Plant, but in real life. But, I got the last laugh.
and boy, they sure are cute when they dig holes in your garden, looking for their free lunch. They hung from it -- upside down, rightside up and sideways. I was nervous because I wanted to place the feeder within a couple of feet of my fence so when I'm in my kitchen I can lookout and watch the birds. They scratched at it. But I was assured by a local birder that this feeder was "the one." Sure enough, I placed my feeder within 2 feet of the fence that my lovely squirrel enemies love to run up and down.
I have an ongoing war with squirrels. The squirrels have been reduced to scavenging on the ground for leftovers. Yep, they climbed on it. It is now 3 weeks later and I have declared victory (at least with the bird feeder).
And the lifetime guarantee. Can't ask for more than that. A return to Backyard was a no-brainer. Maybe the best. This is one of the best bird feeders I've ever used.
I originally bought this at Backyard Bird Shop but before opening the box I checked on Amazon and found it $20 cheaper, with free shipping. It's well made of good materials that should last me a very long time. The birds love it and the squirrels have been buffaloed. Probably won't have to use it.
This bird feeder does everything it claims. It is well put together and it was well worth the extra cost. You'll never need to buy another feeder.
It's incredibly well constructed and by that I mean it is made of heavy-duty materials that snap solidly together. While assembly is delightfully easy, it's important that you follow the very brief, well illustrated and easy to understand assembly instructions. I would add that everyone should use a latch with a snap hook for everyday use rather than when only attempting to deter racoons, bears or other critters as suggested by the manufacturer. Since I've owned it, I've verified every claim made by the manufacturer in its promotional literature. However, it's biggest claim to fame is its ability to deter squirrels.
It operates without expensive batteries and depends on it's design for performance rather than gimmicky electronics or moving parts that are subject to breaking. This product truly represents truth in advertising. As soon as I added one, the problem went away.I would recommend this product without hesitation, despite its price. I've had none defeat it and many have tried. Not doing so proved to be my Achille's Heel when confronting one of the MIT degreed squirrels that constantly attempt to foil my feeder.
